How I work
Two ways in, depending on who you are. Either way it's done live, in person, and anything I write up is short and in plain English.
for CEOs and leadership teams
Mentoring for the CEO. Facilitation for the team. A plan that holds.
Most people start with one and end up using two: mentoring for the person at the top, and facilitation for the team around them.
one to one
CEO mentoring and coaching
- Who it's for
- CEOs, MDs and owners. Often someone new in the role, leading through a restructure, or wondering why the team isn't pulling in the same direction.
- What happens
- We meet regularly, usually for 90 minutes, and you can pick up the phone in between when something blows up. It's confidential, and it's your agenda. Not mine.
- Mentor or coach?
- Some days you want someone who's been there to tell you what they've seen. That's mentoring. Other days the most useful thing is a good question that makes you see it for yourself. That's coaching. I do both, and I'll tell you which hat I'm wearing.
with the team
Executive team facilitation
- Who it's for
- Executive and senior leadership teams who should be on the same page and aren't, quite. After a restructure, a new CEO or a new strategy. Or when things have just quietly drifted.
- What happens
- I talk to people one on one first. That's where you hear what's really going on. Then we get in the room, and I design the session so the different views come out and the team lands on its own answer. Then I stay with you over the months after. A good day in the room is the easy bit. Making it stick on Monday is the work.
- The hard part
- Moving people from an old frame of the business to a new one. Until that frame moves, no plan lands. Then you need a high-functioning team that will have the conversations it needs to have, when it needs to have them. I've been doing this with leadership groups for twenty years.
for leaders and teams
Leadership Circle Profiles
- What it is
- A 360-degree leadership profile. Your manager, peers, direct reports and others rate how you lead. It shows where you lead at your best, and the habits that kick in under pressure: complying, protecting or controlling. Most of us have a favourite.
- How I use it
- I'm a certified Leadership Circle practitioner. Each leader gets a one-to-one debrief. The real value comes next: using the profiles across the team so everyone has a shared language for how they work together, then following through over the months after so it actually changes behaviour. Not a report in a drawer.
- What it isn't
- A performance review. It's for development, and the results belong to the leader.
for business owners
Clarity for the owners. The team on the same page. A plan that holds.
For privately held businesses, where the owners have to be clear before anyone else can be.
owners and their team
Strategy and alignment for owners
- Who it's for
- Privately held businesses with one or two owners, or a small partner group who all have to agree. Often an owner who is out ahead of the rest of the business, thinks fast, and won't read a forty-page report. Sometimes it's about getting clear on why and where.
- How it runs
- Owners first, then the leadership team, then the plan, then action. About a year later we recalibrate, because the picture moves.
- Ways to work together
- Position Session. Usually the first step. Half a day with the owners, then a one-page view of where you're exposed and where the openings are. One page. You'll actually read it. If we keep going within 60 days, the fee comes off what follows.
- Facilitated days. Strategy and alignment sessions with owners or the leadership team, by the day or half day.
- Retainer. A regular rhythm of sessions over twelve months, and I'm on the end of the phone in between.
- Projects. One big decision, scoped properly after a Position Session. Succession, market entry, getting ready to raise capital, group structure, or how the business runs.
